The Perazzo Law Firm answers the question: At What Age Can You Drive in Florida?
Learning to drive is a milestone in life, and for many Florida teens, the countdown to getting behind the wheel begins long before they turn 16. But what exactly are the age requirements, and what should young or new drivers know before hitting the road?
In Florida, you can apply for a learner’s permit when you turn 15 years of age. To qualify for a learner’s permit, the legal-aged applicants must complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course and pass a written knowledge test on road rules and road signs. With this permit, teens can only drive with a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old and seated in the front passenger seat.

At 16 years old, drivers may apply for an intermediate license, provided they have held a learner’s permit for at least one year without traffic convictions. However, restrictions remain in place. For example, a 16-year-old may not drive between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed driver over 21. At 17 years old, those nighttime restrictions are slightly reduced, and by 18, drivers may operate vehicles without limitations.
Tips for Young and New Drivers
- Avoid distractions: Texting, checking social media, or eating while driving greatly increases the risk of accidents.
- Respect speed limits: Speeding is one of the leading causes of teen crashes in Florida.
- Practice defensive driving: Anticipate the actions of others, keep a safe following distance, and always scan the road ahead.
- Know the consequences: Accidents can lead to serious injuries, financial burdens, and long-term legal issues.
